Secret
of
Indian Cave
A true story of the chance discovery of the secret burial place
of the last great Tuscarora King, as told to a
fictional fourteen-year old boy who rediscovers it,
by the one remaining descendant nearly 100 years
old, who sent for the author to divulge the full
story. It is published at his request, with the
author’s approval and promise never to divulge the
location as a means of teaching young children to
respect history and the rights of the Native
Americans everywhere. Set in the Indian Woods
Township of Bertie County, North Carolina.
Introduction includes author’s visit with the
storyteller and Tuscarora history at end.
Juvenile through adult readers. Historical with moral value. |

“Oh, I
know ‘bout it child, I know all right,” he
responded. “I know ‘bout lots of things in this
part of the county that nobody else does.” He
pulled up a chair, motioning for David to sit, and
paced his tired, stooped body across the floor,
hands folded behind his back, head hung low. His
feet slowly shuffled across the worn boards of the
little room for what seemed an eternity for the
young boy with no patience and restless energy.
David thought he would explode just sitting there,
so he wrapped his fingers tightly around the chair
arms and waited. He would not interrupt the old
man. His dad never would have allowed that.
“It’s
an Indian cave,” Clemmons finally said, abruptly
stopping to face the boy. “Nobody ‘round here knows
a thing ‘bout it ‘cept me…least till now.”
