A writer has to be a magpie, filing away bits of colorful
dialogue, an unusual gesture, a bizarre manner of
dressing, a unique philosophy…all these experiences
can help make a manuscript more colorful and
realistic. “Snippets” are what I call my ideas that
can be just one word or half a sentence on a piece
of torn off sale paper. I write down snippets when
I’m driving, bathing, cooking and cleaning house.
I’ve been known to jot down a snippet while the
bride was coming down the aisle, at parties,
funerals and while watching television or listening
to music. When I’m actually writing and writing
well, the gate to my mind is thrown wide open to
receive, and even when working on a particular
manuscript, I find myself jotting down snippets to
the side that have nothing whatsoever to do with the
piece I’m then working on.
Snippets are not journals. Journals are longer recordings of
thoughts and feelings and life experiences.
Snippets are like an idea bank in which you deposit
and withdraw from constantly to use in your
manuscripts. I have been known to say, “I have to go
to the bank,” when I enter my snippet file. Yours
could be in a shoebox, bag or drawer. Snippets are
precious, and in many ways truly are money in the
bank when you need help with ideas and a deadline is
looming. As with most banking, the more deposits
you make, the more withdrawals you can make.
Write down anything and everything that catches your
imagination. These snippets may stay in your
collection for a long time, even years, until
suddenly something else sparks off a connection, all
the different aspects jell and your story is ready
to take off like a jet plane.
